walle

I’ve finally managed to see WALL-E (the latest from Pixar) yesterday and I now understand why it didn’t cometo Mauritius (movies hitting cinemas in Mauritius will probably be one of my upcoming posts).

The story

WALL-E is the story of a small robot who was left on Earth to clean the planet (after years of over pollution) while the human race is away on a space ship. The WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) robots had the task of cleaning the earth but the project failed and they all broke down save one. The latter goes round everyday compacting waste into cubes while he sorts out “interesting” stuff that he keeps for himself. He’s probably been doing that for 700 years when he meets EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) a robot that is looking for evidence that the earth is habitable again. His quiet daily routine changes as he falls in love …

Reviews

This movie has been positively received by critics worldwide and I’m definitely not going to disagree with them. My favorite Pixar movie is probably Ratatouille (the worst one is, according to me, Cars for its too predictable storyline) but WALL-E is definitely very special and quite daring from Pixar. Silent movies is no longer the norm but had the movie been about talking robots, it would just have been an ordinary science fiction animation. So many movies have shown robots with emotions but they most of them just looked artifical while this one is “nearly” believable.

upgrade3-wee

I finally managed to find some time to install Kubuntu 8.10 last Friday 9 November. I got the Live Kubuntu CD and installation is as usual, simple and easy (with the graphical interface) and within 30 mins, I had Kubuntu up and running.

Tip for those who don’t already know: since I had Kubuntu 8.04 and didn’t want to lose my files when “upgrading”. I backed them up, to be safe, and then when installing, I chose not to format my existing ext3 partition. This works wonders since I didn’t lose any data from this partition and I didn’t even have to use my saves, after reinstalling firefox and thunderbird, all my mails and plugins were there – really awesome!

Once up, everything is as smooth and sleek as usual. Compared to Kubuntu 8.04 which was very unstable with KDE 4.0, Kubuntu 8.10 appears rock solid like the previous versions.

But … the looks!

Yeah, there need to be a big but coming! I use Kubuntu coz I prefer the KDE interface to Gnome. However, since KDE has moved over to version 4, I’m not really happy with the interface…

  • Katapult: It has disappeared. It’s not really that bad since ALT+F2 is now much better and does what Katapult used to do and is much better than the previous ALT+F2, yet not as good as Spotlight or Quicksilver on Mac. I quickly changed the shortcut to ALT+Space … old habits don’t die easily :)
  • Window borders: The default is Plastik! I changed over to Oxygen and Ozone and it still looks ugly! It’s a pity and a shame!
  • The Dashboard: On Macs, the dashboard is messily packed with useful stuff but it’s hidden. I surely don’t want my desktop to be as crowded as that and so Macs wisely hides the dashboard with F4. Kubuntu 8.10 has a dashboard but it’s your desktop and surely looks messy :(
  • LTS: Since we’ve moved to KDE 4, we’ve not had any LTS version for Kubuntu while we have it for Ubuntu. This makes Kubuntu look like the ugly duckling of the Ubuntu family

I’ve only had it for a few days and maybe I’ll get used to it but if I don’t I think that I’ll be moving to Ubuntu soon. Gnome looks much better these days, why not try it.

24_rg_exam_paper_4

That’s the talk of the town these days … there were leaks in the exam papers for Physics, Chemistry and Maths … how can Cambridge, “which never errs” have allowed that??? Everyone is going crazy about that and slandering the Mauritius Examination Syndicate (MES), Cambridge and The Ministry (& Minister) of Education has become the favorite pastime of many Mauritians!

Who’s Concerned?

Before we continue, let’s see who is affected. Is it all the 10,000 candidates or more precisely the 2,000 competing for a scholarship? Well no. Not all of them do Maths, Physics and Chemistry. So I guess that at most it’s 1000 and just for 3 papers at most! Is it reasonable to hold the exams again? Certainly not! As some students rightly pointed out, no one is going to move from C to A coz of the leaks!

La critique est aisée, mais l’art est difficile.

Instead of taking a malicious pleasure at slinging mud around, let’s try to analyze what can be done. Not much and that’s obviously why the MES and the Ministry of Education are more than happy to lie waiting for Cambridge to come up with a magical solution. They have quickly realized that they unfortunately won’t be able to please everyone.

The only possible solution lies along the path of least pain and again, everyone has his/her theories about what it is … but they cannot seem to agree!

So what now?

  • Can we request Cambridge to make special papers just for us and will they agree?

We need to realize that we are in this Mauritius-Cambridge relation, we are the weaker of the two. Of course, all this bad publicity is doing nothing good to Cambridge’s image but we also need to realise that most of the fuss is about Mauritius, not about Malaysia , Australia or in the international press. You don’t agree with me: Google for Cambridge A levels exams leak. It’s hardly in the news! We are crazy about exams but sorry for you Mauritians … the rest of the world is not!

  • Requesting Cambridge to hold our exams before any other country

Timezone cheating will always be there since it’s impossible to hold the same exams at exactly the same time (I’m afraid that switching to International Baccalaureat won’t help). I don’t know how Cambridge will receive that but that may be the best solution for us for the coming years. We seem to be more crazy about exams that other people around!

  • Speading false rumors

How to get at cheaters. Was I responsible for exams at Cambridge, as from next year, I would have hired people whose sole job would have been to spread rumors around exams time! That should teach potential cheaters a nice lesson.

  • For now, special exams?

Well, the main issue is the Scholarship scheme. Who’s going to get it? Most of those who want to retake the exams are those concerned with the scholarship. So let those who badly want to compete for it take one special paper for each of the incriminated subject. This should allow the Government of Mauritius to see who “really deserves it”. As for the others, let just the exams minus the “leaked” questions count! That should be enough!

By the way, in Europe, scholarships are meant for poor students who would otherwise not have been able to go to the university had they not been paid or subsidized for them!

To conclude

A witchhunt is useless here, well I know it’s good to be blaming others but i think it’s time for solutions. To the students that want to redo the exams to become “laureats”, prove your worth, this time not through bookish learning but rather by proposing worthwhile solutions.

obama_at_grant_park

Barack Obama was elected yesterday as the 44th President of the United States. It was an election that has been followed the world over since for the first time, the US would have a President of African Origin while Afro-Americans represent maybe 10% of the US.

So why does that interest me? After all I’m in the small island of Mauritius far far away from the US. Well the US is the last remaining super power and whatever they do is bound to have an effect on the whole world. But more than that, it’s just that in Mauritius, there is an unwritten rule which says that to be the Prime Minister (the equivalent of President in the US), you have to be of the right ethnic group and right caste in that group as well!

Of course some people will say, well Berenger was Prime Minister. Yes but he was not elected to be the Prime Minister directly. He had an agreement with Sir Anerood Jugnauth where the latter would be Prime minister for the first three years and he (Berenger) will be the Prime Minister for the remaining two years. So contrary to what many people are saying, we did not show the way to America! That’s total bullshit!

On the other hand, some Mauritians (many of whom gave Obama no chance at all) are now saying: well, America is different and you can’t compare the US to Mauritius. Indeed, they are right. They are just not civilised enough to be able to consider that a man can not be of their ethnic group and be a worthy leader!

In the US, it’s: Yes we can. Here it’s: No We can’t! … honestly we really can’t!!!
